What does lorem ipsum actually say?

Nothing coherent. The canonical opening comes from Cicero on ethical goods and pleasures, but the standard text is a scrambled, truncated version — words were cut and re-stitched, so the received passage does not translate.

Why use it instead of 'text here text here'?

Because realistic word lengths and sentence rhythm reveal layout problems early. Repetitive dummy text hides them — every line looks identical, so nothing wraps where it should.

Can I get an exact number of words?

Yes — choose Words as the unit and the count is exact, which is what you want when filling a fixed-size slot such as a card or a meta description.

About Lorem Ipsum Generator

Lorem Ipsum survives because it does what placeholder text is supposed to do: it looks like real prose without inviting you to read it. Latin wordforms stop a reviewer asking what the copy says, and a natural distribution of word and sentence lengths shows you how a layout behaves under actual text instead of a column of identical 'test' words.

This generator draws from a fixed vocabulary of classical Latin words and assembles sentences of four to twelve words, paragraphs of three to six sentences, and optionally the traditional opening — 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor…' — which comes from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, badly scrambled by a sixteenth-century printer. Switch that off and every paragraph starts fresh.

Be aware what it is not: the output is pseudo-Latin, not a recovered passage, so it is meaningless on purpose and unproofread by design. Use it for layout, and replace it before anything ships. Counts are capped at 200 paragraphs, 1,000 sentences or 10,000 words per run so the page stays responsive.
